Overnight in Tianjin

One of the things that amazed me in China was the globalization. After a week of Chinese everything Tanya and I found ourselves in a 5 star Hotel in Tianjin and we could have been in New York. It was nice to have some cheese and chocolate after dinner but at the same time, when in China aren’t you supposed “do like the Chinese?” I guess if you’re doing business you don’t care so much about culture.

But there was a culture street that we visited and it was really, really cool. The silk Market in Beijing is fun because you can get fake stuff for cheap, but you’re still going home with fake things. The culture street was amazing because we were the only white faces among Chinese tourists. (They were out buying things to celebrate the Spring Festival on January 25th.)

Tanya and I had wanted to go to the mountains before we went back to Beijing for our flight but it didn’t work out. We didn’t have much to do so we walked around wasting time. We found a spa and magically managed to get massages for ten bucks! Despite the damage below, it was so nice to get out of the cold and rest.

We got to the train station almost two hours early and putsed around for an hour until Tanya asked where our gate was. The train station was big like an airport and full with people going home for the holidays. Apparently we were at the wrong station!
So off we go dodging people left and right running around this huge building to where the cabs are. With the help of a translator we found this random guy (not even a taxi driver) to take us to the other train station and amidst our panic Tanya had the nerve to barter on the price with the guy! As we were running to his car there was a little fence to be hopped over and following his lead Tanya tried to use it as a step. Unfortunately her foot got stuck and she fell right down into a one handed push up.
It was so funny. I was already out of breath, and now I was laughing so hard I really couldn’t breathe and I was still running, it was nuts. It felt like the amazing race! Tanya didn’t seem to enjoy it so much but I loved it.

Brilliant don't you think?

  1. Oh my goodness, I was actually laughing out loud at the mental image of Tanya falling off a fence into a ‘stellar’ (as I’m sure it would have been) one handed push up. ahahah! Only Tanya. as you race off to trust yet again random dude to drive you to the correct station and not a black market kidney stealing operation. Goodness. Oh the adventure! xoxoxo
